Biography:
Vladislav Yakovlev is a professor of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics and Astronomy at Texas A&M University. He got his BS/MS and PhD degrees from Moscow State University, Moscow, USSR in 1987 and 1990, respectively. He is a fellow of American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, American Physical Society, Optical Society of America, and International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). His research interests include advanced optical spectroscopy and microscopy, ultrashort laser pulses, fast microscopic and nanoscopic imaging and microscopic biomechanics.
Abstract:
Ultrasensitive detection of small molecules in air and water is important for a number of biomedical and environmental applications. We have recently developed a novel sensing platform based on the integrating cavity concept, which allows enhancing weak optical signals such as fluorescence and Raman scattering by many orders of magnitude through tremendously increasing the interaction beam-path in the medium. In my presentation, I will review Raman spectroscopy as a tool for non-invasive remote optical sensing and will discuss some existing approaches to increase both the sensitivity and specificity of such detection.
