On June 26, 2024, the 11th Lv Weixue Academic Forum was successfully held in Zhou Yixing Suite, Yuquan Campus. Prof. Kang Lee, Chair and Professor from the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the University of Toronto and one of the recipients of Chinese Distinguished Young Scholars, was invited to give a lecture on the topic of Transdermal Optical Imaging (TOI) and its Applications in Medical and Psychological Fields. Prof. Wu Dan from the CBEIS hosted this forum.
Transdermal Optical Imaging (TOI) is an imaging technology that uses a digital camera and advanced image processing to extract facial blood-flow data from a human subject. This method could be powerful for neuroscience research and also have a good application foreground. Prof. Lee also demonstrated the mobile app developed by his team. Through video for around 10 seconds, the app can quickly assess the individual's age, heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, and other physiological and psychological data, which were corroborated by research data later on. He then elaborated on the application of TOI in polygraph, health surveillance, and other fields.
The lecture vibe was nice, and everyone was super involved. Prof. Lee showed us the latest application videos and software of TOI in a fun way, getting everyone super interested and chatting up a storm. He patiently answered all the questions and shared his own academic journey and life insights, which really struck a chord with the students and motivated us to focus on making our research work more practical for the benefit of society.
